Teenagers in the Land of Smiles - are they smiling?

My teacher told me a very sad story today. This is all happened here in Lopburi where we live.

On Monday of this week, two girls at her daughter's school were fighting over a boy. This school is right across the street from a pool that we go swimming at sometimes. One girl was 15, the other 18.  The 15 year old won the battle. The 18 year old pulled out a knife, and stabbed the 15 year old in the chest. She died. The 18 year old has fled.

A fight over a boy?!

She told me another story of hearing gunshots in the middle of the night at her house only about 6 months ago. This time, two boys were after the same girl. One boy showed up at the other boy's house in the middle of the night and shot him in the back. I believe he is paralyzed now.

I couldn't believe that these things have happened right here in our city, but at the same time, we  hear these kinds of stories in America all the time as well.  What has gone wrong with our teenagers?!

America has their issues, and Thailand as well. Here in Thailand, almost everyone thinks that white skin is the best thing. Parents pray that their child will have light skin (and usually prefer a boy over a girl). Whitening creams abound, pills for whitening skin, etc. Materialism is ever present as well. Kids want iPhones and the latest things when their parents can't afford them.

Please pray for the families of these two girls in Lopburi.

Also, we have Thai and American missionary friends here that work with college students. They live right near the University and the school where this girl was stabbed. After hearing stories like this, that are happening right here, I think we need to be praying more for these student ministries. It is often in college that Thai students hear the Gospel. Pray that the students would come to know the One who loves them, the One they can trust in and form their identity in.
